Compensation Solutions
Participates in the
“Books
in a Bag” Initiative
Business Volunteer Council Program Promotes Family Literacy
OAKLAND, NEW JERSEY - (April 20,
2006) – Children who can’t read, can’t succeed. A home
environment rich in books and inhabited by people who love to read is an
early indicator for a child’s success in the classroom and later in
life. Often, children in low-income families grow up without books
because food and shelter are the main priority. As a result, many start
behind – and stay behind. To address this problem, Compensation
Solutions (COMPSolutions), one of the tri-state area’s leading
Professional Employer Organizations (PEO), recently participated in the
Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer Council’s (BVC) Books in a
Bag program by collecting more than 300 books for distribution to
pre-school children in local Head Start programs.
Books in a Bag is a family literacy initiative created by
the Business Volunteer Council seven years ago in response to a need
identified by Bergen County Head Start, a federally funded early
childhood education program for very low-income families. The BVC has
given more than 5,000 children five brand new, age appropriate books to
take home and keep. Employee volunteers collect, sort, bag and deliver
the books, often remaining in the classroom to read to the children.
“It’s not just our kids that love Books in a Bag – it’s
the whole family. Everyone practices reading together and connects in
this shared activity,” said Nancy Griner of Bergen County Head Start.
“COMPSolutions is committed to
supporting local communities with our time, our talents and our funds.
As a Human Resources company, COMPSolutions recognizes literacy as a
core competency for the development of good communication skills that
are the cornerstone for future success. And where better to start than
with the youngest members of our families?” said Thomas J. Cioffe,
President and CEO of COMPSolutions.
